Too many choices? Hugo Galvao on the new online shopper

Online shopping was built around a familiar behavior: type a term, open several results, compare products and gradually narrow the options until one seems right. Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho, founder and director of Enjoy Pets, works in a digital market where that journey is beginning to change. Consumers still search for products, but the abundance of marketplaces, advertisements, reviews, videos and nearly identical offers can make finding the right item surprisingly demanding.

Why can online product search become exhausting?

More choice initially appears beneficial because consumers can compare brands, prices and features without depending on the limited inventory of a physical store. The problem emerges when abundance turns into repetition. Searching for a relatively simple product can generate dozens or hundreds of similar results, requiring the shopper to determine which differences actually matter. Instead of increasing freedom of choice, an excessive number of nearly identical alternatives can make the decision process longer and more demanding.

Comparison also extends beyond the product itself. Buyers may check delivery dates, seller ratings, return conditions, reviews, specifications and prices across different platforms. Each additional variable increases the effort required to reach a decision, particularly when product titles and descriptions do not clearly explain why one option differs from another. As a result, consumers may spend more time filtering information than actually evaluating which product best addresses their needs.

From the perspective of Hugo Galvao, this creates an important challenge for ecommerce businesses. Offering more information does not automatically make purchasing easier. The information needs to help consumers eliminate unsuitable alternatives and understand which product corresponds to their actual need, reducing the amount of investigation required before checkout. Clear organization and meaningful distinctions between options can therefore become as important as the quantity of information available.

Is search giving way to answers?

As Hugo Galvao points out, traditional search generally requires the consumer to formulate keywords and interpret a list of results. Conversational AI changes that interaction because a shopper can describe a situation instead. Rather than searching repeatedly for individual product characteristics, the person can ask which type of item is appropriate for a particular use and refine the request through follow-up questions. This can shorten the path between recognizing a need and identifying a smaller group of products that genuinely fit the situation.

This does not necessarily mean conventional search will disappear. Consumers may continue moving between search engines, marketplaces, social networks, retailer websites and AI tools during the same purchase. What changes is the expectation created by systems capable of synthesizing information instead of simply presenting another page of options. The consumer may increasingly expect digital tools to organize the available choices and explain relevant differences before requiring further comparison.

What happens when the consumer wants fewer options?

Retail has traditionally associated assortment with convenience, but digital abundance can create another problem: deciding which alternatives deserve attention. A customer may not need to see 80 products if five clearly differentiated options are sufficient to solve the problem. In that context, relevance can become more valuable than volume. Reducing unnecessary choices can make comparison easier and allow consumers to focus on the characteristics that genuinely influence their decision.

According to Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho, recommendation systems already move in this direction by reducing the visible universe according to previous behavior, preferences or contextual signals. Conversational tools can take the process further because the consumer can actively explain what matters. Budget, intended use, size, urgency and other requirements can become filters expressed through ordinary language rather than multiple menus. This creates a more flexible form of product discovery in which the selection can adapt progressively as the shopper provides additional context.

That possibility changes the role of ecommerce discovery. Instead of helping people navigate the largest possible catalog, businesses may increasingly need to help them reach a suitable decision with less effort. The competitive question becomes not only how many products are available, but how quickly a customer can understand which ones are worth considering. In an environment already saturated with alternatives, simplifying that decision can become a meaningful part of the overall shopping experience.
